Marine Collagen vs Bovine Collagen

An honest comparison - which one is actually worth your money

"Should I take marine collagen or bovine collagen?" This is one of the most common questions I get from patients. The honest answer is: both have benefits, but for most of my patients, I recommend marine collagen. Here's why.

The Key Differences

FactorMarine CollagenBovine Collagen
SourceFish (skin, scales, bones)Cow (hide, bones)
Collagen TypePrimarily Type ITypes I and III
Molecular SizeSmaller peptidesLarger peptides
BioavailabilityHigher - absorbed up to 1.5x more efficientlyStandard absorption rate
Best ForSkin, hair, nails, gutJoints, bones, muscles
Taste/SmellMild, easily maskedCan have stronger flavor
AllergensFish allergy riskDairy-free, but not suitable for some diets
SustainabilityOften from fishing byproductsDependent on cattle farming
Dietary CompatibilityPescatarian-friendlyNot suitable for pescatarians

Why I Lean Toward Marine

Type I collagen accounts for about 80% of the collagen in your skin and is the most abundant collagen in the human body. Marine collagen is almost exclusively Type I, making it a direct match for what your body needs most.

The bioavailability advantage is significant. Marine collagen peptides are smaller, which means they pass through the intestinal wall more readily. When you add Three International's Cellular Absorption Technology into the equation, the difference becomes even more pronounced - 7.3x more bioavailable than standard collagen.

When Bovine Might Be Better

I want to be fair. Bovine collagen has its strengths. If a patient's primary concern is joint health or bone density, bovine collagen's Type III content provides structural support that complements Type I. Some patients also prefer bovine collagen simply because they have fish allergies.

That said, for the majority of my patients who want comprehensive benefits - skin, hair, nails, gut health, and some joint support - marine collagen delivers more per serving due to its superior absorption profile.

My Recommendation

For most adults looking to supplement with collagen, I recommend starting with a high-quality marine collagen. Collagéne is what I personally use and recommend to my patients because of the Cellular Absorption Technology, the clean formulation, and the scientific rigor behind the product.

If you have a fish allergy, bovine collagen is a solid alternative - just look for grass-fed, pasture-raised sourcing and hydrolyzed peptides for better absorption.
